Greeting from the P.I.!!!!

from 2006 06 14:

duuude! i'm in the freakin' philippines! a rooster just woke me up. hahah. we just got in last night. everything was pretty much dark, so i haven't really gotten a chance to really see the PI, but, dude!!! i'm finally here!

the plane ride was looooong. to start off, we loaded the plane and started taxi-ing off when i guess the pilot received word that we had to take some luggage off of the plane. (they overbooked the flight so some people had to take a different plane.) so we pulled back in, took the luggage out, and then we started to taxi again, but found out that we didn't have enough fuel. so we had to get fueled up again. it doesn't sound like it took much time, but all in all, we ended up leaving a whole hour late! gaah!

the plane ride itself wasn't too bad, i guess. i did get seated in back of a tall guy who blocked my vision and in front of a japanese kid that cried and kicked my chair often, but i think it wasn't too bad of an experience. dinner was good: teriyaki chicken & rice. the breakfast options were an omelette or fried rice w/ pork. luckily, my dad got a vegetarian plate, so i just ate his food. he had a bagel (which was yummy) and some warm fruit/rice dish (which was reeeeally weird).

the movies shown: last holiday, big momma's house 2, and she's the man. they showed some other things, too, though, like behind the scenes of 8 degrees below (or something like that, i have no idea) and a special documentary on penguins!!!!!!!! how freakin' awesome is that?! they pretty much followed the life of a baby humboldt penguin from conception to teendom. i wanna hug a baby penguin!

we stopped over in tokyo! unfortunately, our stopover was reeeally short. we didn't get to see much, although i took a picture of a really weird toilet and some of the localized products in the japanese convenience store (popcorn called "mike", fruity kit kat, and french soup flavored pringles).

for the majority of the flight from tokyo to the PI, i totally kept knocking out. i was awake to tell the stewardess that i wanted water, but i think i fell asleep before she could hand me my drink. hahah. or something like that. i was really out of it. food served: chicken curry. i'm not too fond of curry, but it was some good shtuff!

my uncle ben (my dad's brother in law) met us once we got through baggage claim (which took freakin' forever! i have never seen so many balikbayan boxes in my life!). in the airport pick up place, they sort people by last name! "families with last names DEF." hahah.

my mom, sister, and i rode with my cousin jennifer and her husband tracy while my dad took the majority of our luggage and rode w/ my uncle ben. luckily, their house was only 15 min from the airport. we passed by a lot of mcdo's, kfc's, a jollibee, and a couple of chow kings.

we came home and we met one of my nephews! he's 3 years old. he's really shy, though. he was diagnosed as being autistic, but my auntie still needs to get a second opinion. he can talk (repeat words and recite nursery rhymes) but he's still lacking in conversational speech (i want this, i want that, etc).

at the moment, i am currently freezing my ass off. wtf? you ask. all of the rooms in my auntie & uncle's house are air conditioned. w00t! yes... so i still don't really have the full experience of the PI, but i think i need to be eased into it. so yeah. right now i'm cold as i listen to the sounds of a rooster and a crazy cat. i need to pee but the bathroom's in my parents' room and i'm not sure if i can disturb them. it's 1:00pm on june 13 in the states and 4:00am on june 14 here.

i'm not sure when i'll be able to get internet access to upload these or check my mail. hopefully, i can do it soon. my mailbox is gonna be freakin' full!

so preparation-wise... the 2 main things people told me: 1. don't drink the water 2. don't get kidnapped. hahah. i tried to learn some tagalog before leaving. kuya russell lent me a "conversational tagalog" book that i took a look at on the plane. he also conversed with me a little bit via txt and over the phone. but i'm still really not comfortable speaking it. when i got here, i had opportunities to say something, but i either stayed quiet or said it in english. T= d'oh!

we're supposed to check into our hostel today, but not for another 8 hours. one of my relatives is awake and in the kitchen. i don't know what her name is...

a lot of people have been telling me to have fun while i can (@ the barkada banquet after party & afterward) cuz e-board's gonna be a lot of work. i'm not scared of it, though. i don't know if it's just because i'm not aware of the magnitude of the work or if i'm just confident enough that i'm gonna be able to do it (with the help of e-board, a-board, and alumni, of course).

i'm excited for a-board. i think ideally, we would have 26 people on a-board. for each position, there would be someone who held that position in the past and someone who wants to hold it in the future. that would be awesome.

people have been dropping knowledge all of the place. i hope i can retain/remember it all.

we really are a bab-e-board. with the exception of rhea, everyone else pretty much got involved with barkada in the same year i did or later. i wish i went to more events so i had more experience. i didn't go to the alumni banquet or sportsfst my freshman year because i was either practicing for or having my debut. this past year, i wasn't able to attend a lot of the meetings because of MISSA meetings, but i think that's okay cuz i was able to see what clubs can offer its members academically.

i have a lot of ideas for next year. i still need to turn them into measurable goals. i'm so excited for e-board retreat!!! i'm glad we'll have a chance to sort out priorities.

i haven't even been gone a full day yet.

i should probably end this cuz it's getting crazy long. ingat ka!

--------------------

so later that day, we checked into our hotel (hostel 1632). it's near the malate district (bars & clubs). i wanna come back here w/ friends when i'm older. then we went to robinsons place (one of the malls) to eat at a filipino food buffet where we had a manalo family reunion!!! i met a lot of relatives. there's still one cousin i still have to meet, tho. but yeah. it was weird cuz one of my uncles looks just like my dad. hahah. but younger and he smiles a bit more. after that, ate bing, ephteen & her husband richard took my family to bay walk. it's a pretty chill place, lit up by colored balls, with restaurants and a coffee shop overlooking manila bay. there was a live band playing, too. awesome atmosphere.

today, we went to villa escudero. it's basically a plantation/museum thingie kind of like the polynesian culture center in hawai'i, but with filipino things. there was a carabao-drawn tram type thingie that picked us up at the entrance; they sang to us. i didn't really know the songs, though. the museum had a collection of arsenio escudero's possessions, including a loooot of catholic statues, exhibits of the different cultures of the philippines (igorots, moros, etc), and dozens of clothing. there were maria clara dresses from all the first ladies and clothes from all the past presidents (even emilio aguinaldo!). there was an exhibit on jose rizal, KKK flags, and armor. we had lunch at a "waterfall"; the water was flowing at our feet! after that i chilled with my cousin-in-law, andy, and her daughter, selena, in the pool. selena's so cute! she's about a year and nine months old! she's so tiny, but she has those big filipino eyes. then it started to rain and we went home.

the ride back to paranaque was a long one--three hours! i wanted to stay awake and just take in the views, but i kept knocking out. then we chilled at uncle ben/auntie ellen's for a lil bit. then uncle ben dropped us back at robinson's place to buy an adapter for the sockets. so now teh lappie is charging! w00t.

tmw: mall of asia?! (=

btw, the jollibees here are like starbucks; they're on every corner! i still haven't eaten there yet; i need to eat at a greenwich, too.

Barkada's End of the Year Banquet + After Party @ PR house = awesomeness! I just got home. I don't have time to recount the whole night cuz I need to get ready for my sister's graduation stuff, but I just wanted to post some stuff since I probably won't be able to go any other time before I leave.

almooooost!

So the last final for the day/quarter/year is in 30 minutes. I've been sitting in my car since 6pm.

Well, there was the exception of me getting out to turn in my research paper to Gallegos. I totally forgot to put the paper on a disk and submit it through turnitin.com before submitting my paper. Luuuuckily, he let me e-mail it to him. I submitted it to turnitin.com and barely got green (1 word - 24% similar); 25%+ may be considered for plaigirism issues. Yes, I can't spell.

I totally should've gotten something to eat. The only thing I've eaten today was a bowl of granola & soy milk from Trader Joe's (or Traders Joe if you're my dad).

I'm so done with this quarter. I probably should have studied more for this final, but I think I've reached the breaking point.

I r teh excited for the banquet on Saturday!!! I can't wait to see Jean's rendition of "I Wanna Be Loved By You." Hopefully I don't screw up on "Someone to Watch Over Me." I still need to practice w/ teh instrumental...

I'm gonna beach it tmw and Friday. Yay! Too bad it's gotten gloomier and gloomier. I'm sure it'll still be fun, though. Yay for time to do absolutely nothing!

I hope I'll have some form of Internet connection when I'm in the PI. I dunno how I'll survive w/o teh Internet for 2.5 weeks. Gah!

What I plan to do on the 16 hour (?) flight to the Philipines:
  • watch as many movies as I can before my battery dies
  • read "Conversational Tagalog" (thx kuya!)
  • teach my parents how to use my old/their new digi cam
  • sleeeeeeep
Hmmn... Maybe I should buy a portable DVD player. Maybe not... I've been spending money like it's [insert something here that would make sense].

Test in 20min. I guess I shall end the pointless blabber now.

Honor. Wisdom. Earnestness.

Tonight, I was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for business students. I actually saw a few familiar faces; no one I really talk to, though. The ceremony could've been smoother--you'd think after 11 years, they would've done things like have a paper program and tablecloths and have the people announcing names speak into the mic--but overall, it was still a pretty good program.

A couple people spoke, but I couldn't really catch their names. I think one was Frank, an alumnus of Cal Poly Pomona who used to make $1.50/hour bagging groceries. Another speaker was a current teacher, Ralph Miller, I think. He had a lot of good things to say. A memorable thing he said was, "Society is a mosaic." Each of us is different, we are our own picture; but we have to work together to make an even bigger picture. His grandpa immigrated to the states from Denmark when he was only 16 and was the first foreigner to graduate from San Jose State University. Miller's really big on promoting immigration; future leaders/entrepreneurs/bright people shouldn't be hindered by the color of their skin, their country of origin, or gender. Well, he said it more eloquently than that, but you get the picture.

Beta Gamma Sigma. What the hell does that stand for, you ask?
Bebaeos = Honor
Gnosis = Wisdom
Spoude = Earnestness
Those are some honorable values. I just hope I can live up to those principles. I just need to remind myself each day to strive to do honorable things, seek wisdom, and be earnest in everything I do...

I want these when I graduate:

These things make me wanna graduate right now! Can I graduate but still stay in college, please? (=

growth, change, and side notes

This past year has gone by so quickly. I didn't think that I changed much, but in comparison to last year, a lot has happened to affect who I am.

Tonight was the CIS Interclub Banquet. At last year's banquet, the only other CIS person I knew that was there was Jay (Ballesteros). This year, I knew practically all of the MISSA people and some SWIFT, faculty, and alumni. My network has definitely grown in the last year.

Side note: I really don't like speaking in front of people, especially if I don't have a speech prepared (which reminds me that I need to work on a welcome for P-Grad).

I definitely think I'm more social and open-minded than last year; I still have a long way to go, though.

I've learned a lot: from corporate cultures to Filipino culture; improving performance on the stage and on the court; what I want from myself and what I want from other people.

I need to be less passive. And, as aforementioned in a previous blog, I also need to regain my punctuality.

I feel freer to be myself. I can talk in a British accent, say a corny joke, or sing my heart out in front of other people now. I can admit my uncertainties to a room full of people. I can say what's on my mind more often.

I need to remember to think before I speak more often, though.

Another side note: With some people, the more you get to know them, the more you like them. Sadly, with others, the more you get to know them, the less you like them.

My circle of friends has evolved quite a bit, as well. When pNotes went karaoke-ing, the girls sang "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls.
If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends,
Make it last forever friendship never ends
Something I realized: I don't consider any of the girls I was friends with at the time that that song came out (essentially, TABEN) to still be close friends. I rarely even talk to them. lol. I'm so retarded. TABEN and NAMAN. How do we come up with these names?

Some friendships from high school still remain. I must acknowledge Khaing at this time for her efforts in trying to keep us together. Thanks, also, to the PCN goers. Maybe it'll become a tradition?

I still have a lot of thinking and reflecting to do, but now I must work on my welcome...

shoe heads are crazy. there's a shoe store in west covina that has a frequent shoe buyer card. buy 10 shoes, get one free! (or something like that.)

i wanna find my twin. well, actually, not really. i wouldn't wanna see another me. but it would still be cool.

Life

I took some time to think about my future today. No, not just what I want to do for the next five years, but what I'd like to do when I'm having my mid-life crisis in my 40's.

Then it hit me how young I really am. I know I've always been the younger one, but, dude, I really am young. I haven't even hit the 20 mark yet! I have so much of my life left to live.

Who decided to have us work for most of our lives? We have some fun time as kids, then we spend a chunk of time going to school, but once we hit our twenties, we have about forty years of work ahead of us! Why are people in such a rush to grow up...?

Anyway... Growing up, I always assumed I would get married and have kids. During my teens, I went back and forth through the spectrum, from knowing exactly who I wanted to marry to being completely opposed to the notion of marriage. In recent months, I thought that I would be content being a single working woman. After all, having a family would be a hindrance to the job of a on-the-go consultant, wouldn't it?

But today, I looked at my proposed timeline of events, and it looked pretty empty having just a list of jobs. After a long day at work, I don't want to come home to an empty house. I know I'll never be #1 mom or wife, but I'd still like to try. It'll definitely be a challenge, what with 9 year olds having MySpace's, cell phones, and iPods.

::sigh:: Wherever life takes me, I hope I'm happy.

Casio Exilim Z750

You are mine.

PC World's Best Buy

I ordered it around 03:00 from Amazon.com for $300. I got "overnight shipping" but due to the weekend/holiday it won't get here until Wednesday, but it's still in time to capture teh month's events:
  • 01: pNotes nite
  • 02: CIS interclub banquet
  • 03: pGrad
  • 04: beta gamma sigma installation
  • 08: beach day, girls' nite out
  • 10: barkada's end of the year banquet
  • 11: my sister's graduation
  • 12-29: philippines!
woot!

I wanted to get the exilim s600 in blue, but read that the shutter speed & picture quality aren't that great, and those are some of the things I wanted to improve about my digi cam.

Summary of improvements:
  • 7.2 MP instead of 4
  • unlimited length of mpeg 4 movies (well, as much as the memory can handle) instead of 1 min
  • 2.5" LCD screen instead of 1.6"
  • 325 pictures per battery charge vs. 160
  • faster start up
  • 30 best shot scene modes
Yay!
